Adie's Kids

About this site

This site contains pictures from two Usenet newsgroups alt.binaries.pictures.children and alt.binaries.pictures.fashion.youth. The content of this site keeps with the spirit of the a.b.p.c newsgroup: nothing you find here should offend anyone. All the pictures are going to be appropriate, respectful pictures of children. Please see a.b.p.c FAQ for more information about the group.

The pictures are replaced with a new set every Sunday. Not all of the pictures from the newsgroups go to my site. What I choose pretty my reflects my own idea of what is the best stuff of each week.

Some history and background

Before I started this site, I had been viewing the pictures of a.b.p.c. in a similar site called "Deltoid's a.b.p.c archive," for my own ISP didn't offer useful Usenet service. When that site went away, I found it unbearable to be without the pictures, and purchased a proper Usenet account from a third party. Once I had done that, I figured I could as well let others benefit of my good news feed and give something back to the community that way. Hence, in July 1998 bought also a web account for the pictures, and Adie's Kids was born — although its name back then was, after Deltoid's site, "Adie's a.b.p.c. archive."

Later on I started including pictures also from the newsgroup a.b.p.fashion.youth. Since there are pictures from both newsgroups in here, and they are replaced with a new set so often, this can hardly be called an archive. Hence the current, vague name "Adie's Kids."

The first few months of its existence this site was hosted at servers of www.sci.fi. That didn't last for long, since they didn't like the high amount of traffic the site was generating, and canceled the account without any notice. Hence I moved over to the next ISP at address personal.inet.fi/surf/bpc1. There the quota was 25 MB but there was no traffic limit, so I updated the site twice a week. That lasted until summer of 2003, at which point someone complained to the ISP and they kicked me out. As of this writing the site, finally, lives at the permanent address adieskids.net and is hosted by ipowerweb.com. With 60 GB montly traffic quota, 500 MB disk quota and once a week updates things are working very nicely. Hopefully I don't have to start looking for yet another ISP for a good while now.

Regarding the idea of using free hosting, that's a no go. They quickly close any site that causes any significant amount of traffic. I've tried many enough free hosters to know.

And finally...

The response to my site has been overwhelmingly positive. I get a few emails a week from my users, and practically all of them are Thank You mails. Usually they also include some question. Answers to the most common questions are in the FAQ. All this positive feedback is a terribly motivating thing, and the most important reason for me running this site. This does mean it's very much okay to email me about anything related or not related to my site :)
