Adie's Kids

Frequently Asked Questions

There are certain questions that I'm asked fairly often, in one form or other. Below I attempt to answer some of those.

Q1. Where do you get all these pictures from?

From the Usenet, specifically two newsgroups alt.binaries.pictures.children and alt.binaries.pictures.fashion.youth. See the next question.

Q2. What is Usenet?

Usenet is a world wide, public, quite uncontrolled forum for discussions and other information exchange. It is also possible to post pictures and other files into the Usenet groups. Usenet is not run or governed by any single entity. Usenet is a service in the Internet, just as the World Wide Web is. For far better explanations, see for example http://www.faqs.org/usenet/.

For those who won't bother figuring out what Usenet is: Usenet is part of the internet, but it's not part of world wide web, and you can't access it by a browser. It's also out of my control what pictures I get from Usenet — that's up to people who put the pictures into Usenet.

Q3. Do you have more pictures of this or that kid or subject?

I only put into my site the pictures I get from the newsgroups (although not all of those fit in my site). Thus, if you would really like to see more pictures of some series, you should contact the person who posts those pictures into the newsgroup. In each update there is file "pfns"; if the pictures are under 20030427/p, then the pfns file is 20030427/pfns. .That file lists the newsgroup and poster for each picture I received for that update. You can use that file to find out who has posted each picture, and then contact him or her. Do remember to be courteous in any requests or questions you ask. I sometimes repost pictures if you ask nicely :)

Q4. Are pictures from past updates available?

In general not. The disk space requirements would be huge. If you ask nicely, I may put a reasonable number of past pictures into the site though.

Q5. My ISP doesn't carry the newsgroup, or most of the pictures are missing. What can I do?

You have to get your Usenet service from somewhere else. I don't know of any suitable free service. If you do, please let me know. There are several excellent commercial alternatives, such as Easynews.

Q6. How do you choose which pictures you put on display and which not?

I pay attention to following things when choosing which pictures are left out and which ones go in.

  • The picture must be tasteful, very much as explained in the a.b.p.c. FAQ.
  • Either I must like the picture myself, or I must know the picture is liked by many of my visitors.
  • I strongly favor pictures with high technical picture quality. Grabs from TV or video tape don't have good chances of getting in.
  • The picture shouldn't be huge compared to its resolution and picture quality. In other words, the jpeg compression shouldn't be too low.
  • I like to keep seriesen whole, although in many cases that's not possible. I almost never modify pictures. In rare careses I recompress very large pictures, in which case I add for example string "_mod" in their name.
  • Pictures which are available from somewhere else, such as the poster's own web site, get a lower priority.

Q7. Why do you offer this service?

Mainly to give something back to the community. Before I started my site, I had been viewing the pictures of the newsgroup in a similar site run by someone else, for my own ISP didn't offer useful Usenet service. When that site went away, I found it unbearable to be without the pictures, and purchased a proper Usenet account from a third party. Once I had done that, I figured I could as well let others benefit from my good news feed, and bought also a web account for the pictures. The feedback I've been getting about my site has been exclusively very positive, and that wonderful feedback is the reason I keep offering this service. This does mean it's very much okay to email me about anything related or not related to my site :)
